A Bit of Whimsy

This is the Week of Whimsy. In case you were wondering, whimsical means "playfully quaint or fanciful, especially in an appealing and amusing way" (a definition I just adore) and that is exactly what I tried to evoke today.

Don't Bite Me Please

So, I got bit this weekend. I was innocently dancing with some dude at a club in Vancouver, British Columbia and he thought it would be fresh to bite me. NOT COOL. I sprung away from him and in an instant, my girlfriends had separated us by 10 feet. Have you ever had a stranger BITE you before? It's an experience I don't wish on anyone. The worst part is that he blamed it on me: I "seduced him too much." Asshole.

Other than that, we had a fabulous weekend.

Kilts and Flowers

Hi! It's Floral Week around here and I'm posting two outfits today!

Tuesday: A long kilt-like skirt that's a teensy bit longer than my knees requires a high nude heel to lengthen my leg line. It worked! I like my proportions in this look. The hair piece is a spin on Floral Week. I like the juxtaposition of the structured, pleated skirt (very classic) with the bohemian-like headband (very flower child).

Blouse: H&M
Skirt: Thrifted (Talbots)
Shoes: Calvin Klein
Headband: No idea

Wednesday: One of my favorite looks this year. Super simple and really chic. A basic (thrifted) floral-print blouse with a little padding in the shoulders tucked into a cropped harem pant. This outfit works because, although both top and bottoms pieces are fairly blousy, the tucking gives me a defined waist. If I didn't tuck the shirt, I'd look very large and straight all the way down instead of looking like my proportions are balanced. The pointed shoe keeps my leg line going long. I also chose to wear a long necklace to extend the look of my neckline without wearing a v-neck blouse. (It's a little trick: Crew neck shirts with long necklaces to mimic v-necks.)

See that lob coming out in this picture? Lob = long bob haircut

Pants: Loz Feliz (Aritzia
Shoes: Chinese Laundry
Necklace: Banana Republic

My neck always looks so sunken with those pads!

Mask Needed to Enter

Jason puked tonight. We're still not sure if it's food poisoning or a stomach bug, but all I know is that taking care of an adult is not the same as taking care of a child. Not only does a child have less potential quantity to vomit (smaller body = smaller stomach), but also, I don't have any children. I only have an adult. And so, I must care. Even if I don't want to. Even if it grosses me out. (It does.) Ah well, I suppose that is what "in sickness and in health" is all about. Oh dang you, marriage vows!

In other news, I am deep into spring cleaning right now. I am developing a protocol by which I purge the unused/unneeded/overly used/overly loved/overly worn/excitedly-thrifted-but-then-forgotten items in my closet and I'll share soon. Over the weekend, I thrifted, styled, I found myself a new pair of glasses. See below. An unexpected benefit of consulting on glasses as a stylist. (I still must pay for them; I'm not important enough to get super spendy things for free yet.)

Ever the studious-looking person in very fancy cat-eyes

This week is Florals Week and even though I came up with the theme, I found myself unexcited and uninspired when looking blankly at my closet last night. All at once, brilliance struck. I shall play off of the florals theme unexpectedly, like the floral appliques on this cardigan or a floral scarf or...or...! (See below for the floral appliques.) Not floral and yet still floral. If you know what I mean. (Soooo clever, Kelly. Most definitely amazeballs <---- In my mind.)

And so I totally made it work. I mean, I very seriously rocked this look. The tones are all in the same color family, the shoes make the outfit preppy and yet still fun. The polka dots on the structured blouse play off of the floatly flowers on the cardi. The kelly green skirt. The sunshine yellow top. The denim blue shirt. The beachy, I-don't-care hair. Minimal makeup. Tucked in and accentuating a small waist. Maximizing best assets. So perfect. One of my favorites. Swoon. If I could marry an outfit, I'd marry this one. Structured, reliable, built to stand the test of time, and yet still colorful, flirty, unexpected, and full of personality. Highlighting the best in me. Just the marrying type. I would definitely take care of this outfit when it's sick. Happily. I bet it doesn't puke as much as Jason.

Ode to the Oldies

Last day of College Colors Week and you can't even see that I've worn a University of Washington tee shirt under my jacket. Oops! This wasn't exactly what I planned to wear this morning, but I woke up late and the zipper on my jeans broke, so this is what emerged. Not half bad, right?! I kind of have a Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band look mixed with Michael Jackson circa 1980s vibe, non? Just need one silver glove.

I love the look of the slim, casual pant with the buttoned-up, more formal top. The shoes give it a fun, playful look, like most pairs of Converse do.

Polka Dots

Can you believe the NCAA upsets already?!?! Sheesh!

I'm showing off my loyalty to the University of Washington today and also celebrating the first day of the NCAA tournament (and the part of March that much of the nation is too distracted by basketball games to work). This is easily my favorite time of year: The beginning of spring, the blooming of flowers, the mayhem of March Madness, MY BIRTHDAY! So many things for which to be happy and grateful!

UW colors are traditionally purple and gold, but they print much of their paraphernalia in a taupe gold color, so that's what I went with today. (My coworkers beg to differ, but they're also Gonzaga and Washington State University fans, so they're opinions don't really count.) I went with a mix of purples and a taupe-colored polka-dot skirt.
